This week staff and volunteers from Age UK Somerset “knocked and ran” but in a good way as we delivered free food bags to 50 older people in need across Somerset and North Somerset. The bulging bags containing long-life essentials such as rice, tea bags and tinned foods as well as a fruit smoothies and some goodies including chocolate, were bound for destinations as far afield as Frome, Nailsea, Weston and Yeovil, and many places in between. All the food came from donations via the national charity Age UK, innocent drinks, Chard Rotary Club and some kind individuals.
One overwhelmed recipient commented
“I received a bag from a very nice gentleman. I couldn’t believe it! No one has ever done anything so lovely for me in all of my 80 years! Thank you Thank you Thank you!”
Another generous recipient said:
“A very nice volunteer dropped off food at my doorstep today, I shared it with my neighbours, making three people very happy.”
A further recipient said “There is a god in heaven.”
Those delivering were in many cases moved to tears at the response.
All precautions were taken and social distancing guidelines were adhered to. The chief and sole bag packer was our charity’s Chief Executive, Phil Dolan who said
“We were overwhelmed with staff and volunteers all wanting to deliver these free food bags. It was amazing to be able to help those older people in need and we are so grateful to those individuals whose donations have made it possible. One kind lady is sending us £200 each month to help others as she and her husband are so thankful to have each other and sufficient food in their cupboard. That is so thoughtful and kind and so typical of many people in our area.”
We have requested more food donations in the hope that we can make up and deliver more food parcels to people across our patch. The frequency and number of food deliveries we can make is limited by the number of items that are donated and their arrival at our office in Taunton where the bags are put together, but if you know anyone over 60 who is struggling to get supplies, they can register their need by calling 01823 345610 or emailing firstname.lastname@example.org
Alternatively if you are able to donate suitable food please contact the charity using the same details.
